This is our first full week of school. This week we will have our first spelling tests and vocabulary tests. Students should have their spelling words written in their planners and the vocabulary words and definitions in their language arts notebooks. The lists are also on my website under assignments.
Last week, I sent home the graphic organizer for our book reviews. It is due October 1st! Please don't wait until the end of September to start your books! I would hope that students will have a book picked out by the end of this month, so that they will have time to read it and fill out the graphic organizer. We will be going to the library on Tuesday, so maybe they will find a book there! Also, many of you have already sent in money for the Scholastic News and I am so glad. If you have not yet, please do! It is $4. It is a great way to promote literacy. It provides current news and articles that are kid friendly and very informative. It is also a fun way to work on reading our non-fiction skills. Officer Black is back! D.A.R.E. will be on Mondays from 1:05-2:00 starting Aug. 31st. It runs for approx. 8-10 weeks. Can't wait for this week, Ms. Sims

The first day of school was a huge success! We are starting to get to know each other and how our classroom works. Yesterday, the students generated rules that they thought were necessary in the classroom and then condensed them down to nine rules. All rules were discussed and agreed upon by all. Today, we all signed the poster stating the rules.
Welcome to my 5th grade classroom! I am so excited to start this year! Don't forget that school starts August 19th!
